MIDI Art

Some might like to know that free-hand drawing is now featured on the MIDI clip editor (aka piano-roll). It's one click away from the Edit/Select Mode/Edit On menu or the pencil tool-button.

Speaking of overdue TODO lines, another one bites the dust. On SVN trunk (qtractor-0.4.5.1516+) of course.

Edit On's approved! :)

The question is: How does it sound? :)

Well, free-hand drawing on the main piano-roll canvas to enter a bunch of note events is indeed invitation to cacophony. But who knows who may like it? Never underestimate the power of the highly talented >:) Anyway, one thing's for sure: it is fun, the first bunch of strokes at least ;)

Now seriously, this feature is more targeted for entering continuous controller event curves than anything else.

Cheers.

To everyone the. For some people and the jazz will be cacophony, and function actually is very useful and convenient. (I am sorry for my English)

Whaou I am impressed ;-)

I like the pencil tool-button, qtractor now will be the best midi sequencer for users of electronic studio on linux.

I am currently testing svn version

Thanks rncbc for your art work :D

Hi

I know it's not the right place, but .. I just wanted to say that I really love Qtractor, "but" it's really a shame not to be able to connect each ouputs of Hydrogen (bass drum, snare, etc.) separately into Qtractor... this feature is really lacking.

Hope it will appear soon, and really good job anyway!

cheers
Olivier

I'm afraid I don't have all the clues to take on the shame so easily :)

What exactly feature are you saying it's lacking in Qtractor ?

If recording each hydrogen output separately is what you're after, then it has been there possible for ages: just create one input bus for each h2 output, connect their respective ports one by one and assign each bus to a different audio track input. Is that it?

Thanks

Hi,

shame on me (lol)! - forgive my poor English.
I got it now; it's working perfectly indeed! In fact yes, this is what I was looking for. The trouble came from the fact that I created as much tracks as hydrogen outs I needed, but forgot to give them a different name (ouch). As a consequence, in writable clients in jack, all I could see was "Master/in_1" and Master/in_2"...

Sorry for my incompetence! lol. Anyway, it's really a great piece of software and I love using it.

For it to be perfect for me now would be to be able to change the background colour of the interface (like the dark one on the presentation picture - I am using Ubuntu/gnome) and to be able to see if the entry levels are correct, that is not too high with distortion.

That's it. Thank you very much again for taking the time to answer and for your remarkable work.

Regards
O

Re. background color
- can't really tell how gnome deals with global qt4 applications color palette, however it's dead easy on kde4 as you might expect; you can even have kde4 color themes apply to gtk/gnome apps so that your desktop apps look consistent in style. It might also be distro specific. Anyway, if all else fails, try using qtconfig to the rescue.

Re. level meters
- I can't believe you missed looking at the mixer (menu View/Mixer)

:)

Thanks!!!

Keep up this work on the MIDI. Great, now we can draw controller data better.

I'm gradually crossing over to Linux. I've back tracked a bit by going to Ardour Mixbus on a Macbook for various reasons but MIDI has also been a problem. I notice Qtractor has a randomiser. This is something I love in FL Studio because it has an excellent randomiser. It's a great way to use computers to spark new creative ideas. Here is a link to a screen shot of the FL Randomiser.

In QTractor you have note, time, duration and value. From that screen shot of FL randomiser you will see it has a lot of power but the absolutely most useful function is the drop down list where you can choose chords and scales that randomised notes will adhere to. You can also change a file to make your own harmony rules. This is a fantastic quick way to generate new musical ideas. The FL randomiser also generates notes from scratch which is quite cool but the ability to be able to control the chords and scales is really fantastic. I would love to see this one function in Qtractor. Even a way to move notes into scales after creation would be great.

Also, a related idea - Seq 24 has a useful UI tool which highlights lanes of notes depending on the scale. Very simple but useful UI feature.

I currently have QTractor on a small Ubuntu tablet PC. I would really like this to be a MIDI machine with occasional audio use without using any Wine apps. This is almost possible now.

Excellent idea! Scale randomizing and quantization should be added to the never-ending TODO list ;)

Cheers
