Various observations/possible bugs

Hi Rui,

Congratulations on another great release :-) I'm just testing now (latest git) and thought this would be a good time to list some things which I've accumulated over the last few months or so. Some could be bugs, some could be intentional, but please let me know your thoughts and whether you need any tickets opening.

VIEW > TOOL TIPS
Turning this off doesn't disable the text seen when hovering over GUI icons at the top of the screen (New session, Open session etc.), just the info when hovering over clips etc. (as far as I can tell). My interpretation of a Tool Tip is that it's information on the icons in the top bar, so I was expecting this to be the case in Qtractor too. Should it be the case (i.e. it's a bug)? If it's working as intended, might it be worth changing "Tool Tips" to something more descriptive?

TEMPO MAP FRACTIONS
If you have a fraction for BPM in the Tempo Map (e.g. 100.5), this will be rounded up/down in the main view (thin, horizontal grey bar above the tracks) and the top of the MIDI Editor. Is this a bug or intentional (e.g. done to avoid clutter)?

AUTOMATION NODES MISMATCH - CALF EQUALIZER
Input/Output Gain values in Qtractor automation nodes don't match those of the plugin. For example, a Qtractor Input Gain node of 5 would be 14dB in Calf; a Qtractor node of 0 would be -4.5dB (even though Calf goes down to -36.1dB). I'm using the 8-band EQ, but I imagine it's the same for any of them. If this is a Calf issue, please let me know and I'll post over there (though they didn't acknowledge my pitch bend one so I don't know how much luck I'd have).

FYI, I'm not sure if this might be related to the AUTOMATION NODES - DESCRIPTIVE TEXT point in this previous post. If so, such lack of descriptive text is much less of a concern, as at least the automation is hitting the correct values. For the issue I'm reporting here, however, there's an actual mismatch between the node and the plug-in value.

CONNECTIONS WINDOW UN-SELECTABLE
If you double-click a track in the main view, choose the Plugins tab, then right-click and choose Audio > Outputs, the Connections window appears. However, its top bar is greyed out, meaning that you can't do anything with it. In order to access it you need to close the window behind it (Track) - it will then become active.

AUX SEND - BUS NAME CHANGES NOT REFLECTED IN MIXER
If you set up an audio/MIDI Aux Send via the Mixer, then change the bus name to which it refers in the Buses window, the Bus name in the Mixer will not update to the new name. When you click on the Aux Send, it'll be set to "(none)", meaning that you need to set it again. It'd be better if the bus name were updated automatically or, if this is too much hassle, were set to (none) automatically so that the Mixer isn't showing false information.

FILES WINDOW - CLEANUP DISABLED
I've no idea why this happens, but sometimes when you right-click in the Files window the Cleanup option is greyed-out, even when there are files present and able to be cleaned up. If you then click away and right-click once more, Cleanup appears correctly. This happens in both MIDI and Audio tabs and has been in as long as I can remember. I've tried to isolate the cause but couldn't, so decided just to let you know.

COPY/PASTE BOTH MIDI NOTES AND CONTROLLER DATA?
Is it supposed to be possible to copy/paste both MIDI note and controller data (e.g. Controller 7/Volume) in the MIDI Editor at the same time? You can Ctrl-click the notes/data so that they're both highlighted, move them both and place them both on the timeline (still highlighted), but as soon as you click away the controller data disappears, leaving just the notes. I tend to think you either shouldn't be allowed to Ctrl-click both in the first place, or (even better) both notes/data should remain pasted correctly in place.

Sorry for the long post, but please let me know whenever you have time (no rush). Thanks.

quick and short answers now; long ones: maybe later :)

re. VIEW > TOOL TIPS
yes, the View/Tool Tips options applies to hovering clip or floating data tool-tips. WAD (working as designed).

re. TEMPO MAP FRACTIONS
yes. the tempo and time-signature is displayed in integer format on the to time scale rulers. WAD.

re. AUTOMATION NODES MISMATCH - CALF EQUALIZER
yes, confirmed. but most probably it's the plugin's fault for not designating proper units or properties for some or all of its control parameters eg. telling that one parameter is expressed in dB or, in alternative, follows a logarithmic scale instead of a linear one.

re. CONNECTIONS WINDOW UN-SELECTABLE
yes. confirmed. it's related to the fact of a modeless window (connections) being summoned while a modal dialog (track properties) is active; this particular issue won't be fixed any time soon, at least so easily. sorry.

re. AUX SEND - BUS NAME CHANGES NOT REFLECTED IN MIXER
yes. confirmed. however this is a minor hindrance imho. the aux-send refers to a bus by name which isn't there anymore once you changed it's name. that's why it gets back to "(none)" when re-activated; solving this issue is possible but lots of intrusive code will be needed: results just doesn't pay much ;)

re. FILES WINDOW - CLEANUP DISABLED
yes. maybe. i've seen this once or twice. i'll look into it again, when i find the due time of course.

re. COPY/PASTE BOTH MIDI NOTES AND CONTROLLER DATA?
er, yes. maybe. well, same as above :).

cheers && thanks.

Thanks for the quick confirmations. Like I say, there's no rush on any of these as they're hardly big issues, but if you do get chance to revisit them at some point it'd be helpful. My responses are below for the couple that need them.

VIEW > TOOL TIPS
No problem. If you think the name is misleading and should be changed, please let me know.

AUTOMATION NODES MISMATCH - CALF EQUALIZER
If it does turn out to be a Calf issue, please let me know the details and I'll report. As I say, I'm not sure if they'll reply but I'll certainly try.

it certainly is Calf lacking of proper hints for those input control port properties.

look! if you try on Ardour and edit plugins parameters with generic controls, you'll get the same issue or behavior. and that goes for any other LV2 host out there.

hth.
cheers

OK, thanks. Will let them know. (Sorry - never thought to try in another host. Only have Qtractor installed these days.)
