You are here

Congratulations on the 0.1.0 release!

Hi Rui,
A big congratulations on your Qtractor 0.1.0 release is certainly in order here! This program is making some genuine progress, and I am thrilled for you, and everyone who uses it.

What are your plans for the next milestone release? Hopefully a few more of my previous suggestions, and your GREAT idea of Jack route-able aux buses (with plugins ;).

I know you refuse to call Qtractor a DAW, but regardless, to me it is certainly a DAW, and a damn good one! Ardour better watch out, as Qtractor is snapping the heels of it. ;)

Take care,
Lexridge

A big thankyou.

There's too many things still undone and new ones are arriving all the time. As you might understand, I have only one head, two hands and a couple of hours per day to work in this stuff :) But don't get me wrong; it is a pleasure and greater it is when people like you push the moral up ;)

These are the things still in the (big) TODO list, and not in any particular order:

  • DSSI and native VST plug-in support
  • MIDI SysEx librarian
  • MIDI event list and filter
  • Automation / Dynamic envelope curves
  • Auto cross-fading of overlapped clips
  • Punch in/out and loop recording (eg. takes)
  • File revision resource management
  • MIDI Editor draw mode
  • Snap/Zoom menu accessibility
  • Effect aux. send/return (pseudo-plug-in)
  • Clip split command
  • MIDI groove/swing quantize
  • Pitch-shifting of individual clips
  • Buffer/CPU% and underruns monitoring
  • File error message handling
  • MIDI controller feedback
  • Mixer presets
  • Mixer fader groups
  • Clip locking, muting
  • MIDI sync (MTC/SMPTE, MIDI Clock)
  • OSC or D-BUS interface
  • JACK-MIDI support
  • Integrated scripting (angelscript?)
  • "New..." project session dialog
  • Project session templates
  • "Paste Repeat..." command and linked clips

You might find some of your own suggestions in the list above. If any are missing, please tell me as soon as you catch it ;)

Meanwhile, on my current workbench there's DSSI and native VST plug-in support. That's right, with DSSI-VST you will reach windows VSTs through wine, and with native VSTs you should have an open road to native linux VSTs -- yes, there are some few breeding out there;)

It's coming, but I can't really tell when it will be ready ;) But one thing I can assure you, that's what will make it into the next dot release.

Happy || what?

Rui,
Impressive list! Especially the DSSI-VST plugin support. Nice! I was pleasantly surprised to see that item.

The only additional two things I would like to see in that list are:
- LADSPA/DSSI plugin support for individual Clips.
- The single-key-press Split Clip at the playhead we had discussed earlier. Of course, this could be in the edit menu as well.

cheers,
Lexridge

Yep, this is a good one, should make it to list, of course ;)

- The single-key-press Split Clip at the playhead
Ah, this is listed as "Clip split command" bove.

[EDIT: One special note: in case you did notice and before you party too early... the list is kind of a wish-list, don't assume that all of it will be done by the next dot release; eheh, far, far from that :]

Just a few other things that I just remembered, which maybe aren't too complicated to add:

- There should be a modifier key (shift+drag maybe) that prevents the Clip/mouse from moving left or right, when dragging to upper/lower tracks. Sometimes it can be a pain re-aligning the Clip back into time once dragged to another track. You probably already have this, and I just haven't found it. ;)

- A double click in an empty space on a track should select all Clips within that track. Sure beats click+dragging to select all clips within a track. Perhaps you already have this too.

Of course. That goes without saying. ;)

Hi Rui,
Nothing new here, I simply reordered your list and organized it a bit (well, I did sneak in one item ;). Like your list, there is no priority to it. To me, it makes it a bit easier to read:

General
* DSSI and native VST plug-in support
* Snap/Zoom menu accessibility
* Buffer/CPU% and underruns monitoring
* OSC or D-BUS interface
* Integrated scripting (angelscript?)
* A global option to turn off all time-stretching -- would be handy for tempo matching without modifing clips (Added: 2008-01-29)

File/Project Mgmt
* File error message handling
* "New..." project session dialog
* Project session templates

MIDI
* JACK-MIDI support
* MIDI SysEx librarian
* MIDI event list and filter
* MIDI Editor draw mode
* MIDI groove/swing quantize
* MIDI controller feedback
* MIDI sync (MTC/SMPTE, MIDI Clock)
* Automation / Dynamic envelope curves

Tracks
* Auto cross-fading of overlapped clips
* Punch in/out and loop recording (eg. takes)
* File revision resource management

Clips
* Clip split command
* Clip locking, muting
* Clip Plugins
* Pitch-shifting of individual clips
* "Paste Repeat..." command and linked clips
* A modifier key that prevents the Clip/mouse from moving left or right, when dragging Clips to upper/lower tracks (Added: 2008-01-29)

Mixer
* Mixer presets
* Mixer fader groups
* Effect aux. send/return (pseudo-plug-in)

No, there's no current way to keep constant timing while dragging clips. I confess I've always relied on the snap-to-beat facility, but now that I think I find it to be a very good idea though. Must add this one to the list too ;)

- double click in an empty space on a track should select all Clips within that track
As you wish ;) in the mean time, the current way to select all clips in the current track is either via de menu Edit/Select/Track or by shift-clicking on the colored track number (the firts column on the track list, main window left pane).

Once again, thanks!

Ah, this works great. Nevermind the double-click thing. This method covers it very nicely. :)

Thanks!

This just went through: double-clicking on an empty area (de)selects all clips on track (qtractor 0.1.0.840+)
