LAC2012@CCRMA-Stanford

I'm back! from this years journey to Linux Audio Conference 2012, held at the CCRMA Stanford, CA of course :) Good riddance of a +0800 jet lag, it took me almost 3 days do recover in full, sort of. Still speachless though. Well, I never was a good speacher nor writer anyhow, even on my own native mother's language (european portuguese for the clueless). The LAC journeys are mostly the single opportunity on each year when I get to exercise some spoken english, as awful as my own version of it may sound to tender ears. Move along.

Yes. Another year, another LAC, one can cynically say. And yet, this year marked an ephemeral 10th anniversary and it went all just so perfect and smooth as much of that kind numerology can go. It might be kind of lazy to say there were zero (0) incidents to rant about. It's amazing what so much can be done with so few good people (or so I think). Sure that we all missed some old faces and habitués, most notably Frank Neumann aka. AudioFranky. But the few who mastered the steering wheel have done a whole hell of a job. Fernando Lopez-Lezcano, Bruno Ruviaro, Robin Gareus, Julius O.Smith and Jörn Nettingsmeier at the backstage, as always.

The talks were great, the coffee was lousy but the latter got completely obscured by any sip of wine I could find from Napa Valley, which was just excellent, in fact exceeding all my best expectations. From this egg-head of yours, yet coming from a proud-and-traditional-wine-makers country like Portugal is... well, well... that was nice, really nice :)

Apart from all the frivolousness I had to pursuit just because it was my first chance laying my foot at the American continent, add to that that I was zombie-like compelled to touch with my own eyes and get my feet wet by what I call the Magellan effect ;) I had to stare and touch the Pacific ocean once in a life time :) Half Moon Bay was the place, home of the famous Mavericks surf spot. And speaking of it, well, it isn't that a big epiphany compared to what I have back home (Portugal). While stood in awe I did scratched my bald head and thought: -- Hell, this is no big deal, compared to what I have back there. In fact, you'll be amazed about how the west coast of Portugal is almost a copycat of this. Trade Atlantic by Pacific and you're done. Ah! Garret Mcnamara might just have a point in there :)

Back to reality. I am sorry not telling you the whole story and experience this time, compared to last years perhaps. Yeah, so much to tell, so short words to comply.

Nevertheless,

That's all folks!

See y'all next year on LAC2013@IEM-Graz :)

Cheers && Enjoy.

Thanks for that quick report, Rui. Yes, I really regret not having been able to come over this time for the 10th anniversary of LAC, but a change of employer (for the better :-) made this necessary.
Next year, for the LAC#11 in Graz, Austria, I'll definitely be onboard again to share some Austrian wine or Belgian beer with you :-).

Saúde,
Frank

howdy Frank.

austrian wine? never heard of yet--i'm now eager to taste it, assuming that's not some kind of german prank :) and what does belgian beer to do with austria or graz anyway?

seeya

Hi Rui,

running way off-topic here, but so what...yes, Austria do have a couple of wine regions, like the "Burgenland". I never tried these yet though, so - they might not meet your standards :-).
I was writing "Belgian beer" since I initially wanted to say "Austrian beer", but I think in that regard Austria is really weak, so I chose another country that's known for its literally hundreds of beer brands (strawberry beer: http://www.frulibeer.com/, chocolate beer: http://www.redoak.com.au/02_11.html - you name it, they most certainly did it!).

Cheers,
Frank

Hi there!

Sorry that I am indeed off topic, but I am offended.

I am an austrian citizen, Frank Neumann is completely wrong. Given his neglecting words about foreign countries products (...I never tried these yet though...) and their citizens ("they do have ... - they are possibly also reading this, so how about writing "the austrians" and following "they" for politeness reasons), I guess he is a citizen of that large northern neighbour country. However I met very many friendly and respectful people there too. I actually tried some beer and wine from our neighbours country but would not dare to utter incompetent remarks about an entire nation's products.

Austria produces very fine wine and beer, both earned world champion titles. Neumann should google "Weinbaugebiet Österreich", "Österreich Wein", "Brauerei Österreich" and "Bier Österreich".

Cheers,
Michael

Neumann, auf deine etwaige Entschuldigung lege ich keinen Wert.

hey Michael,

please don't take it so heartily -- we all know about that ancient rivalry between germans and austrians :) and germans will be germans, ain't them? don't wanna get bitter off-topic here, but reading from former times i've been in germany (early LACs) they even argue a lot about beer between their own and each others anyway :)

cheers

howcome it's off topic? we're talking :) and subject is lac2013, what else?

cheers

Hello, I know, this doesn't belong here, but i don't know where should I write it. I reported a fatal problem with qsampler to the bug tracker 2 months ago, other person confirmed it and there's no feedback from you, or anyone. I know, that you're busy probably, but does it mean, that qsampler is dead?

rncbc's picture

its this the one Bug 177 ? is that true you're still running qsampler 0.2.2.1 ? that's pretty dead i'm afraid. why don't catch up with the times? :)

you ought to run a build from latest svn trunk which might read sth. like qsampler v0.2.2.33+

cheers

Hi, thank you for the quick reply. I'm trying qsampler-9999, which means "the latest and greatest" from the svn in gentoospeak. I mention 0.2.2 just for reference. If you think, that the latest version works, I'll bypass the gentoo/portage build process and fetch/build myself, but I'm skeptical, as the other reporter has the same problem.

rncbc's picture

well, gentoo might not be grabbing the source tree from latest and greatest then... quite frankly i cannot tell what's stopping you from...

what about making yourself part of the gentoo gang and try it first on your side? then compare your (successful) instructions and suggest for a correct gentoo ebuild (?is that what it's called still?)

cheers

Hello,

now I see the problem. gentoo ebuild is grabbing the sources from cvs, but you're using svn now, so the sources there are probably beyond obsolete.
If I grab the sources myself and build it, than it works. I'm sorry for wasting your time, I'll report it to the ebuild maintainer (if there is one :) ).
Is there any chance, there will be a release soon, so we don't have to rely on -9999 ebuilds or manual builds?
Maybe you could kill the cvs, so the build simply fails and it forces someone to fix the ebuild :)

V.
