Hi rncbc and thanks for the tips.
Before I begin testing as you recommend, I ought to mention that Qtractor was in fact the first application that I opened after QJackCtl. No synths, effects, nothing. I had no other apps open at the time, and no previous Qtractor sessions to load either. It was a "clean" opening, so to speak.
Perhaps if I uninstall the recent plugins, it will clear things up...
