Drag'n'drop MIDI files

Hi.

Drag'n'drop of audio (.wav) files onto an existing audio track works fine.
But this doesn't work for MIDI tracks.
If I drag'n'drop a .mid file onto an existing MIDI track nothing happens.
If I drag'n'drop a .mid file into a free section of the main window, a new MIDI track is created and the .mid file appears on that MIDI track.

Why doesn't work drag'n'drop onto an existing MIDI track the way it works for audio tracks/files?

because MIDI files may contain more than one track or channel and that would clash with an already existing MIDI track which stands for one and only specific MIDI channel, always.

you can drop a MIDI file into the Files window pane and after that expanding it for you to see all the channels (SMF Format 0) or tracks (SMF Format 1) in there: only these may be food for new MIDI clips, not the whole file; from there you may then drag-n-drop over the main canvas and place a new MIDI clip anywhere, as long it's a MIDI track...

when dropping onto the empty area, a MIDI file will unfold into as many tracks as there are channels (format 0) or tracks (format 1); when dragging from the leaves of the Files tree window, it will only open one single MIDI Clip if on an existing MIDI Track or on one MIDI Track that is created automagically if dropped into the void zone).

all's working as designed long time ago :)

hth.

Ok, but this is causing another issue on the mixer. I'm using the mixer almost in full size of the screen. So, that I get at least two rows of sliders/faders - I'm using templates with many tracks pre-setup.

Each time a new track is added or an existing track is removed, when opening the mixer the mixer's view changed back to only one row of sliders/faders.
This is really annoying.

Ok, maybe an option to choose from, to set the mixer to the preferred view statically of e.g. 2 or 3 rows could be some useful addition to Qtractor?

that's somewhat unrelated to the topic at hand ...

the said annoyance is probably a temporary layout glitch: you may well give a little nudge on the mixer size yourself and it probably will go back into a multi-row layout again :)

Yes, that's what I'm doing each time. But this is more than just annoying!
It happens too, when duplicating a track or changing tracks order.

maybe fixed on develop branch, commit 7c5d25.

Confirmed.

Great, THANKS!

Hi,

I can't get any working MIDI connections. Either I can't hear anything, or Qtractor crashes when creating MIDI connections.

The problem occurs in the compiled version and in the AppImage.

With AUDIO files, Qtractor works.

System:
Linux Mint 20.1
Qtractor 0.9.23

Regards
Wolfgang

may I say it's a way too vague of a report?

is it the first time you're making such kind of connections? what do you expect to hear anyway? you of course know that MIDI does no sound at all until you connect to an instrument, sound module, synth or some module or plugin that trnslates/renders incoming MIDI into audio , don't you?

please tell us (a lot) more what you're trying to do and what you expect from there, will you?

cheers

I misunderstood the documentation in 2.7 with the MIDI connections. Thanks for your hint: Qtractor is running now.

With kind regards
Wolfgang
