Copying automation from one track to another

I have an audio track which is an export of several midi tracks. I applied automation of gain to this track.

Now I have found some better midi sounds, and have a new exported audio track. How can I copy the automation of the previous audio track to the new one? I tried simply copying and renaming the curve file, but that didn't work.

You have two approaches to achieve this.
The first is the one you have done, only you must first activate the automation in the new track. Then the .mid automation file will be created. Now, delete the new one and rename the old one as the new one.

The second thing is to leave the old clip. Open its properties and replace the old wav with the new one.
The second approach is better, because if there are multiple automations it keeps them all.

In fact, I had already tried the first method suggested (including pre-activating automation), After receiving your suggestions, I tried it again - and it still didn't work. No idea why.

However, the second method worked fine - I wish I had thought of it myself!

Many thanks

you can:

  • just select and copy-paste all the automation curve nodes, from the old into the new track; works when in Edit > Select Mode > Automation;
  • duplicate the (old) track and delete the clip(s) on the (new; duplicate) track; move or copy the media content clip into the new track;

the later option is best to retain all existing automation curves from the old track; not only a single one.

hth.

cheers

ps. please avoid the urge to hack the curve.mid files and/or editing the session.qtr xml at all costs; unless ofc you know what you really doing! :)

Thanks for the further suggestions. I'll revisit this the next time I need to carry out a similar operation.
