[Feature Request] Add a straight line draw tool in the clip editor.

Forums

Rui, this FR is for a straight line draw tool in the midi/clip editor, to be used in CC lanes. The user selects a start point with the mouse then, with the mouse button still held down, "draws" to an end point. When the mouse button is released, a line of events appear between the two points.

We currently have three drawing edit options, OFF/ON/Draw. If you want to maintain those three, then i respectfully suggest adding the option of a modifier to the Draw tool. The user would then press something like CTRL or SHIFT, and hold that key down while operating the mouse.

A separate 4th option, "LINE", would be easier for the user, in my humble opinion.

(This leads into a future Feature Request for the events in the CC lanes for continuous values, i.e. Volume, Expression and so on, to appear as lines with nodes for value changes, instead of clumped individual events as we have now. I've added this note here in case you've already been considering something like this.)

Onwards and Upward,

Alex.

there already is one such tool...

with Edit On, just click and drag the mouse cursor and draw a straight line for which current selected event values will align to it (and only those).

this applies to the event values pane (the one below the main piano-roll) so it's mostly about the second FR of yours.

tbh. I can't see the usefulness in drawing a straight line of notes in the main piano-roll (it doesn't make much musical sense to me, as to have yet another edit mode just for that really, but that's probably just me and my ignorance).

cheers

I'm aware of the Edit On mouse drag function. What it doesn't do is enable me to draw a straight line without making multiple attempts with the mouse for consistent values across multiple clips. (It takes more than one attempt in many cases to get something consistent.) The mouse is a poor tool for drawing consistent lines with, without multiple edits.

The FR is more about event value based input, not just editing initial note velocity events, which occur only at the beginning of each note.

I can record a bunch of notes in clips. Then I want to add events manually for Volume, Expression, etc that provide a consistent set of musical phrase values for each clip, so i can then fine tune those values for musicality, after I have set an initial "global" value across multiple instrument clips. I'd like to do this initial inputting with one pass. A straight line function means i can input and move on quickly to the next clip and so on. So after I put in a phrase worth of notes, i can add a line to indicate a ramp up in volume (for example) a line for a maximum event value for that phrase, and then a ramp down to zero, or a much lower event value.

For consistency across multiple clips, particularly instruments in the same instrument family, i.e. Strings, straight line input is a fast, usually one time addition, with similar consistent values across multiple clips, in a much shorter time than attempting to draw a straight line with a mouse, and having to dither over the values, back and forth, to get somewhere near the same consistent result.

This is definitely a workflow FR, and while it may not seem glamorous, it's important, imho, and a real time saver. (based on past experience)
