If there were a 'single window position' option for the MIDI editor, working with Qtractor would be more fluid.
That is, instead of each editor window saving its own position, all MIDI windows would save and set the last position.
It should be optional, of course, because the current behavior might be interesting for certain workflows.
I don't know if it's possible, if it's worth it, or if it's of general interest... :)
XD That was fun (wrong post)
I never suspected it actually performed anything other than what it claims to.
After learning that, it still sounds like a self-tuning compressor and limiter to my ears. XD

Ops

This is possible with a…
This is possible with a tiling window manager like i3.
That would mean having to…
That would mean having to learn how to use I3... which I'm not sure is worth it.
The minor inconvenience now is opening it, finding the expand window button, and clicking it.
It seems silly. But it's really annoying to open a new clip and have it appear in a new position, and repeat the process.
It's a split-second task, but that doesn't stop it from being irritating.
As I mentioned, the current behavior could have advantages. For example, opening multiple editors for several clips and placing one below the other for tracking.
However, the ghost track is better for that... and on the other hand, monitors aren't usually large enough to make it viable. I don't know the real practical advantage of having multiple editors open.
But that's just my thought and it's a minor thing that maybe only bothers only me :)
I think I've managed to simplify the request
Currently, there is a default position and size for new windows.
What I'm requesting is that this default position and size be variable and match the size of the last MIDI editor window that was closed.
Those who want multiple editors in different positions are not disadvantaged, as they will still have to resize the windows.
They will also benefit, since even if the position of the new window isn't what they want, at least the size is likely to be the desired one, since we usually organize windows in regular grids.
Those who want a single position will automatically obtain it when positioning and closing a window, as is the case with the rest of Qtractor's windows.
This would emulate single-window behavior with multiple windows.
Of course, only the initial default position/size is modified; everything else continues to work as it is.
I insist, I'm just thinking out loud. :)
Best regards
Ignore Everything
Although I think it would be helpful, you can ignore everything I've said.
As @windowsrefund points out, there are window managers that simplify these tasks.
I've also found a viable way to make it more comfortable to work.
I've reorganized the MIDI editor tools so they're accessible from the default minimized position.
If it's a quick edit, I do it directly minimized.
If it's something more complex, positioning/scaling the window exactly where I want it isn't that much work either.
Maximized isn't optimal for me either. The ideal position for how I work is maximized in width, and in height, allowing me to see the general transport options of the sequencer, which I currently have at the bottom. This way, I can activate the metronome if I need to record from the MDI editor.
devilspie
You can do a lot with the size and position of windows with devilspie. There is a graphical editor named gDevilspie.
