Excellent suggestion but I can still reproduce the scenario after setting all the defaults and restarting in order for them to take effect.
The only difference between the way G3N-es uses his busses vs. the way I do is the fact I connect mine to inserts (typically) whereas he uses Aux Sends (I do as well depending on the bus). Again, there are lots of variables here and the "triggering" of this "focus jump" happens in other places I haven't mentioned. I don't see how it'll be possible to drill into this without making use of verbose logging.
