More feedback

Hi there
More feedback for you since I last visited....my thoughts.....take or leave!

Qtractor is really coming on now. I am so impressed. The key editor is great.............it is really giving things a run for their money.....

I am still baffled by midi recording when it's looping. I set the loop points up and put it in record mode.........record some stuff.........the midi goes in......when it loops around again the midi seems to have moved further down the road...............I can't understand why this is happening....is looping and recording midi a problem? I know there are certain issues you've encountered with looping from reading the forums......so I don't wish to go over old ground.....I just find when I want to record a basic drum midi loop of 4 bars in 16ths with it looping around so I can get the pattern right it doesn't seem to do what I want in that it doesn't record the midi......have I explained that clearly? (no lol!) I just want to be able to record a pattern in between a few bars and it always ends up outside of the locators ( to the right side) after one has finished recording.

Also do you think a dedicated stop button on the transport is a good idea? It feels a bit unnatural not having one....maybe it's just me.....

It would be great if somehow down the line Qtractor could be integrated with Linux Sampler to give you a complete solution in one package....so you don't need any other plugins - just a sampler with fx. Linux sampler is really coming on now.....I could see me using this - it's just a shame it lacks effects ( although I appreciate these can be applied to each channel in Qtractor ). It seems we are almost there now with Linux and your product / Linuxsampler to allow us to ditch windows once and for all.

I took a look at Energy Xt the other day (the beta demo is at 2.5.3) and I do like the drum machine they have incorporated into it.......the thing I like about that drum track is that it's simple to put beats down on.....and simple to change a sound for another.....

Sorry to ask for so much when you are a one man band.........you are doing a terrific job!

What you mean by MIDI moved further down the road when recording and looping?

Currently, recording is a linear editing operation, even though you're setting playback to loop. That should be the same for audio and MIDI recording. Although the visual play-head keeps turning around inside the loop-range, all recording goes virtually through the time-line as it were not looping.

(Damn, my broken english is showing its head :)

Don't let that refrain you from trying to explain, a little better, what's really puzzling you. Stubborn as I am, I might be overlooking something ;)

Cheers

Well, I'm still waiting for a LinuxSampler DSSI, VSTi or proper LV2 incarnation. Ain't that around already?

Cheers

Ok I will try to explain my problem again. If you set some locators up say for 4 bars, and press record to record some midi from the piano or keyboard as it's recording first time around you see the notes absolutely fine in between the locators. As soon as the locators cycle around again for the second pass ( still in record mode ) when I play some more notes your original notes don't seem to be there. When I press stop the clip is now outside of the locators (to the right side of them)......and my original notes don't seem to be there.

I need to play around with this - with punch in / out / check the quantise function......but the bottom line is I just want to loop a few bars and keep adding bits n bobs.......and I can't seem to do this. Sorry if this is just me...........I don't know whatever sequencer I use there always seems to be something about the looping between points that doesn't seem to go well for me!

Also on another note I do find it does stop project flow a bit when you have to keep naming a clip before you record.....is there a way of stopping this so I don't have to keep reverting back to the qwerty keyboard every time I record? It is off putting when you just want to jam around........

I'll say it again it's amazing you've done this as one person. Qtractor really does feel stable and nice.....it is like the best bits of Acid and Cubase......on the best os.

It would be nice to have an explorer on the left side of the window (so you can drag midi clips in to the right- perhaps that's possible already...need to play around with it some more.)

I often think to myself when using sequencers 'wouldn't it be great if this sequencer had it's own built in sound module/engine that's integrated....something that has a good sound library and effects, multitimbral and filters.....something you could just fire up the sequencer and off you go......that's why Linux Sampler looks so promising......it would be great if it were integrated as one - so flexible.
I can't face going back to windows anymore to make music. You are our only hope Obi One...........

Hi again
I've just got back home and re-read your answer and my post.....
When you say
"Currently, recording is a linear editing operation, even though you're setting playback to loop."

Do you mean (to be clear) that there is no overdub facility when in record mode on a loop? Is that why my recording is appearing 'down the road' as I put it after the first pass when recording? From reading what you've said - this is what is happening. Forgive me for saying this but putting some locators into the arrangement and looping a part is surely a natural way of recording isn't it? When I am building stuff up I like things to keep looping around and around as I add little bits or add a hi hat line on top of a bass drum I recorded first time around.......so this isn't possible at the moment?

By the way your English is excellent......

I think you got it right, yes. Currently, there's no support for recording in-loop, or overdubbing as you say. If you look closer there's this TODO line:

- Loop recording (takes).

so, something is planned, just keep the faith warm ;)

Oooh I can't wait!
Thanks for all your replies.
