FW Recording with Qtractor .4.7.3

Hello Rui,
I hope you are doing well. I have a few questions for you.

A friend of mine just purchased two Echo Audio AudioFire12 firewire audio units and is using Qtractor and Ardour. There are a few major issues he is having with Qtractor.

1. He is dumping from a 16 track analog tape machine 16 tracks at a time, with a 62ms latency setting. When playing back, none of the tracks are in sync with each other. This appears to work okay in Ardour.

2. When loading a new project after recording, or even when quitting and restarting Qtractor, he has to use Qjackctl to restart jackd, before Qtractor will restart, plus, he has to power down the AudioFire12 units in order to free up jackd before jackd will restart. None of which happens withing Ardour.

He would prefer to use Qtractor because of the MIDI.

Any suggestions as to what to look for? He is using FFADO 2.0.0 using the old firewire stack with the rt-2.6.31 kernel under Fedora 12.

Hi lexridge,

long time no see

all you say seems big trouble indeed.

i will need some more details about your friends setup though, specially about qtractor buses, tracks and respective connections.

what kind or is there a pattern, perceived recording delay perhaps, between consecutive tracks that your friend (or you) can quantify? in other words, how much offset, if any, is needed to apply to each recorded track-clip to make it playback in perfect sync? does that offset seem any regular or progressive with each track, or else? help me understand whats going wrong, please:)

the problem about restarting jackd on each new session seems also a puzzle to me.

which jack version? what happens to jackd when to start a new qtractor session? what error messages are displayed on qjackctl or console output?

seeya

Hello Rui, and thank you for your quick reply. It took some time for me to get this info from my friend, and it is quite a lot. I suspected a firewire problem, and gave him a different FW PCI card to try out. It made no difference. However, I think you will agree that this is entirely a firewire issue. It is rather long, I hope that is not a problem.

------ clip ------

Still having issues about the same issues after trying your firewire card. Below is more info and info from jack messages. I have also attach my /var/log messages and dmesg.

On a side note the MIDI in Qtractor in right on. Using the cakewalk ins file format made setting up the patches of my keyboards really quick and easy. I even made an ins file for my Roland VK-8. Couldn't find an ins file for it on the internet. I loaded in a mid file picked the instrument sounds I wanted and it played fine. Be glad when Rui has a chance to add some midi editing bells and whistles.

Here is the Qjackctrl message output when trying to start jackd. Usually the second time it starts.

Here is the Qjackctrl message output when recording in Qtractor. in the result below Qtractor paused for a few seconds and then continued to record I then stopped recording and captured the message below. Have had this message before....

0mfirewire ERR: wait status < 0! (= -1)
JackAudioDriver::ProcessAsync: read error, skip cycle

on previous multitrack recordings with Qtractor recording 15 tracks at one time. On playback some tracks would not be in sync with others. Verified they were recorded that way by importing Qtractor recorded tracks into Ardour. They played back out of sync. Start over and substitute Ardour for Qtractor and the recorded tracks play back fine in Ardour. Have not tried to play back tracks recorded with Ardour in Qtractor. Feel they would play back fine in Qtractor. The problem is on the recording.

i also agree this could be systemic to the jack/firewire (ffado) interface, specially re. that some or all capture ports have distinct latency added relative to each other.

ardour does have some magic to compensate for this disparate port latency when recording, provided the firewire jack backend fills in each port latency properties in its own right.

qtractor doesn't give a damn to latency compensation, yet. you'll have to bump recorded audio clip offsets to replicate ardours compensation, i guess :) well, that is to say that latency compensation is a completely manual operation on qtractor.

did your friend said that it is using two (2) firewire devices, probably in a daisy-chain setup ? i'll suspect the trouble is in that circumstance--half of the total input ports may get somewhat delayed (ie. fixed latency) when compared to the other half.

ask your friend to try with only one device at a time, probably recording only 8 tracks at once, and see what gives?

also, please, show here the complete output of `jack_lsp -plL` ...

cheers

Rui,
Indeed he (Karl) is using two devices daisy chained together. He is going to try still using both, but not daisy chained...using separate ports on the PCI card. I'll let you know the results, and send you his jack_lsp output.

Lex

Hi Rui,
sorry for the week delay. I finally got the info you requested from Karl.

-------clip------

This is code from rtirq where we added ohci1394 to it.

# IRQ thread service names
# (space separated list, from higher to lower priority).
RTIRQ_NAME_LIST="rtc snd usb i8042 ohci1394"

This is the output of jack_lsp. I'm running jack with 64ms latency, 1024, with 3 buffers. Not getting any xruns. Vocals on inputs 1-5 are not in sync.

rncbc's picture

assuming those reported physical port latencies are to be trusted, i can't see why there any simultaneous recording/capture going out of sync of each other.

however there are system input ports that show different latencies which might affect simultaneous playback, but would be only perceivable if the mix-down is being run on a outboard mixer console--could it be?

well, i'm running out of ideas... did you find any way by sliding one or more recorded clips along their tracks to let them play in perfect sync? which were the ones and how much delay/offset did you have to introduce to make them play as to hear them correct? which tracks/input ports were that recorded from? which tracks/output ports are that being played back?

uhoh, maybe that's too many questions and too much worries about a land where ardour is king ;)
