Going from older version of qjackctl to newer?

With some stability problems running Jack in Ubuntu 8.04.1, & my current v. of qjackctl is 0.3.2, I am considering installing the latest v. of qujackctl 0.3.3, in the effort to resolve. Is this ok? & (how or) do I need to uninstall the older version before... or does the new one just over write the old.

Though I have recently been using Windows XP, & have a fairly stable setup there (I do dual boot with Ubuntu 8.04.1), I am trying to point my nose more permanently in the linux direction, because of the problems inherent in "proprietary" anything in relation to human cultural expressions. For quite a few years, I utilized Mac audio/midi programs which used OMS, a terrific hardware/software sound manager (the virtual time machine marches on, & all seems or is not necessarily "progress" or constructive development, sad to say) .

I am having some problems running jack (Ardour 2.5, Rosegarden 1.6.1,etc.). In fact, I have only once succeeded connecting with my audio output, & never for audio input (midi works), & because of the changes in my system (programs, mostly), do not really know why. As stated, the configuration changes as one loads programs, etc... but basically, is acting unstable as one (me, myself & I) try to keep updated connections, & it gets serious as it sometimes freezes up (crashes), specifically, when disconnecting a connection, & I have to "shoot the computer" in order to escape!

Being rather new to linux... &, say, the dependencies form... I worry about taking out things that other programs use. Perhaps this is unwarranted, I'd like to know more about this issue too... Especially, as upgrading is, in linux, one is left rather on ones own to do (i.e., usually developers do not seem to include instructions for uninstalling (necessities) & in the systems centralized "uninstall" programs add/remove... or synaptic package manager (& others), I have not yet come across any information as to how to take out one program, with out removing dependencies that are also utilized by other programs.

Thanks for any help you may afford.

Upgrading from qjackctl 0.3.2 to 0.3.3 is not only painless but also recommended. Go ahead.

However, I don't really know whether it will solve your problems. I am far from comfortable in arguing about Ubuntu, as I it is not my distro of choice nor I have extensive experience with it. It is my knowing that all debian based package management is terribly picky about dependencies, but that's for a really good cause anyway. If it says that it will uninstall some particular package you better believe there's a good reason for it doing so.

It's just MHO.

Cheers

Hi Rui,

Thanks for reply. Yes, I think I understand the taking away of dependencies... what I wonder about (mostly from my lack of actual experience with) is that there seem to be dependencies which certain programs *share,* seems rather like the domino effect... (?).

Well, anyway, I'll first uninstall the old v. of qjackctl then do the new one. See what happens. If I come back, with a :( on my face, you'll know things may not have worked out so well :) & I realize that your qjackctl program is a "wrapper" for jack, & my problem, I too suspect may lay with ubuntu/jack/, et al... i.e., lower layers some where. I would just go to ubuntu studio, if I wasn't chained to a very slow dial-up connection here. Oh well, back to the "rubberband."

Regards,
Henry
p.s., are you at all familiar with OMS (the one referred to in first msg) ? The Opcode folk got the shaft from Gibson Guitar who bought it & promptly dropped it. OMS was used by most Mac audio/midi programs. Wonder if any of the programmers (who were very upset about what happened) are out & about. Seems to me, open source was their preferred direction (?).

Hi Rui,

Well, first ~:( then ---> ~:)... for the qjackctl 0.3.3 install.

I tried uninstalling 0.3.2 first through the synaptic pm, & then compiling 0.3.3 version via the terminal, no go...

Then I tried reinstalling 0.3.2 & compiling 0.3.3, voila! Success. Alas, didn't seem to solve my audio input problem/s (yet)... so like I said before, back to the "rubber band," Actually, been contemplating going to Kubuntu... maybe more audio friendly? I also will go (back) to the folk at Ardour, perhaps someone there may have some clues?

Regards,
Henry

Henry, you can always ask for help anywhere you see fit (re. ardour or rosegarden forums) in fact that's good practice. But remember please to lay out some evidence of your problems: console messages printout is a must :) Your system details is also complementary: kernel, alsa, jack and sound device version and configuration info comes to mind a lot.

Have that precious and relevant details ready when reporting for help. Always. Otherwise one might be left clueless in the dark, no matter whether he/she is a master of the (witch)craft ;)

Cheers.

Hi Rui,

What you say is "alsa" (sic) right! Do the documentation home work.

Appreciate your help, & I'll try to check in on the forum here from time to time (I downloaded your synth program... no luck getting it to work... but I haven't tried to hard, at the moment, wanting to get sound into my linux box, happening).

Regards,
Henry
