Regarding the AppImage

Forums

Hi Rui:

This isn't a request, just a thought.
I've found a problem with the AppImage format: it hides application resources from the user, preventing them from editing, customizing, or even expanding the application (with more resources like templates, presets, or demo sessions).

I tried running the AppImage, copying the usr folder from the temporary directory, and pasting it into a folder called "QtractorPortable".

It works. You would just need to create a symbolic link relative to the "usr/share/qtractor" folder and rename it to "resources", and another link pointing to the binary in the root of "QtractorPortable".

I think I now have all the technical knowledge I need to create a Qtractor distribution for beginners that includes everything they need to get started: plugins, presets, samples, demos... Perhaps the code would need some minor modifications, for example, to make the configuration file self-contained and avoid conflicts with the official Qtractor configuration, and a few other tweaks.

I don't know if I'll ever get around to it. I want to focus on making music now that I've finally managed to define my workflows, basic plugins, how to create reliable backups, etc.

But having something like this would have made my life so much easier. It's taken me years to achieve this.

If it's to be done properly, it's a huge project. Not only would all the work of creating presets, samples, and demos need to be done, but all the code with the modifications to Qtractor and plugins, compilation instructions (in case anyone doesn't trust the pre-compiled versions...) would also need to be published. In short, it's a crazy undertaking. I honestly don't think I'll ever actually do it, but at least now I know I'm capable.

Would you be okay with a project like this? Or do you think it would undermine Qtractor's philosophy?
