Qtractor 0.5.9 problems opening older projects

Hi,

First of all thanks for sharing and maintaining Qtractor. It is a brilliant and simple DAW.

I have a problem when opening older projects. Qtractor 0.5.9 crashes when I try to open those. This is not a general problem, but for some projects Qtractor fails to open those. I have an older version of Qtractor installed on a separate kxstudio paritition (which is not being updated on my computer) and I have no problems opening the projects using this version.

Automation:
I really like the approach of automation in Qtractor ( and very strange sounds can indeed be made by automating effects and such ), however it would really be beneficial if you could lock regions of the automation curves or have automation to work similar to clips. The 'left from right' approach when drawing automation curves is rather cumbersome particular if you are to make changes in the middle of an automation region. The ability to copy/paste automation regions could also be nice. Secondly, it could be rather cool to have some pre-defined or user-defined functions for automation, such as modulation using wavefunctions, LFO's etc.

Anyways, thanks for a great piece og software,
brg

there's no reason why it can't cope with any older projects or sessions.

can you give us an example of a minimal session file which is older and crashes when opening on the latest (0.5.9) ?

please try with a debug build (./configure --enable-debug && make) and try to catch the crash stack-trace from the command-line terminal/console, when opening any of those troublesome old sessions.

re. automation: yes, some way as a special editing mode to copy, cut, paste or remove automation curve nodes selectively is being planned. yes you can also lock the entire curve on a track, and no, you can't have it locked on a per region or clip basis. sorry.

cheers

Sorry for not being clear, but Qtractor does not crash as such, but just fails to load to project. It keeps trying to load but nothing happens until you kill it.

I have a small project (~ 5 mb ).

ok. i'll suggest you take some time and starting with one of those older session files that freeze on load in 0.5.9, try this carefully, one step at a time:

  1. open (old) session on old qtractor version; remove one plugin, one clip or a track on each step, and then save as different filename; be careful to annotate which filename it is and what particular element was removed; start with removing one plugin at a time, then a clip; and only when a track is empty you shall remove it on that particular trial step.
  2. try opening the session file you last saved on 1. and check whether it freezes on load while on latest qtractor 0.5.9; if it still freezes, as you say, kill it and proceed onto next trial, having this session file as step base; if not, then check which item did you remove last time on previous step and start over from scratch, starting from the very original session file but now you'll remove that suspicious item and only.

repeat until you get a sane, non-freezing and loadable session file on the newest 0.5.9+ and a bare minimal list of potential culprits :)

yes, it's good old trial and error methodology, for which some dose of patience will be needed. take your time please.

hth.
cheers

TAL Reverb II Plugin

Removing this effect solves the problem.

Rock on!
